Star Trek: The Original Series (1966–1969) is the American science-fiction series created by Gene Roddenberry, following the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) on its five-year mission "to boldly go where no man has gone before." It aired on NBC and spawned one of the most enduring media franchises in history.
The show centered on Captain James T. Kirk and his crew as they explored strange new worlds, made first contact, and wrestled with ethical dilemmas that reflected the social currents of the 1960s. Though it ran only three seasons, Star Trek found enormous success in reruns and syndication, building a devoted fanbase that kept the starship flying for decades — through films and successor series like The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, and Discovery.
Widely praised for its progressive vision — a diverse, multicultural bridge crew serving together as equals — the series was groundbreaking for its time. It introduced the iconic meeting of human logic and emotion through Kirk, Spock, and McCoy, a chemistry that remains the show's heart.
A look at the legendary crew of the Enterprise.

Captain James Tiberius Kirk (William Shatner) — The bold, charismatic captain of the Enterprise. A Starfleet legend, Kirk led the ship on its five-year mission, combining relentless curiosity with a talent for improvisation and an unwavering moral compass. He is perhaps the most famous starship captain in fiction.
Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) — The half-Vulcan, half-human first officer and science officer. Spock struggles between his Vulcan heritage of pure logic and his human emotions, finding resolution in the philosophy of IDIC. His iconic Vulcan salute ("Live long and prosper") and his quiet friendship with Kirk and McCoy define him.
Dr. "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley) — Chief Medical Officer, Kirk's closest confidant, and Spock's foil. Gruff and plainspoken, McCoy serves as the emotional heart of the Enterprise, grounding the logical discussions in human feeling: "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!"
Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan) — Chief Engineer. A miracle worker who "cannae" change the laws of physics but routinely gets the ship out of impossible jams. His transporter and engineering expertise saved the crew countless times.
Lt. Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) — Communications officer. One of the first prominent Black female characters on American television in a position of authority. Her pioneering role inspired real-world astronauts, including Dr. Mae Jemison.
Lt. Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) — Helmsman and later security/physical sciences officer. Japanese-American actor George Takei's Sulu was a rare Asian lead on 1960s TV and remains a beloved progressive symbol.
Ensign Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig) — The young navigator, added in season 2. Though technically "the youngest," Chekov brought youthful energy and comic bravado, and was introduced partly to appeal to younger and Russian audiences.
Nurse Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett) — Chief nurse under McCoy, often holding an unrequited love for Spock. Majel Barrett also voiced the ship's computer and later played Deanna Troi's mother, Lwaxana, in the franchise.
